Green Podiatry
putting your feet in the right place
Our feet are expected to take 10,000 steps per day, that’s over 3.5 million steps a year. That's why experts recommend you see a Podiatrist at least once a year.
The repetitive motion of walking and running can place stress on our feet, legs, pelvis, muscles, tendons and ligaments potentially leading to pain, discomfort and injury at either foot level (whether it's corns, callus, forefoot, arch or heel pain) or further up the body as with shin, knee or hip pain, for example.
A Podiatrist is a specialist of the foot, ankle and lower limb. Musculoskeletal Podiatrists look at how the feet function when walking and during sporting activities and then assess how this affects the rest of the body during motion. The lower limb has to deal with a lot of stress and load during walking and sports so it's not surprising that we develop injuries and pain if our feet aren't working efficiently. This type of analysis is also often referred to as 'biomechanics'.
Podiatric biomechanics and gait analysis (studying your walking pattern) can help to identify and address the factors that may be causing or contributing to problems, helping you to recover from an injury or minimise the risk of injury in the future.

The foot is a complex structure of 26 bones, 33 joints and 30 muscles, over half of which originate in the leg and control the foot.
How effective our feet are when we walk depends on how the bones, muscles and joints move and work. Our feet need to be flexible when we walk and run so they can absorb the shock of hitting the ground. But the foot must also be stable enough to support us as our body weight moves over it during each step.
Good foot function depends on the foot's interaction to the ground as well as the position of the foot to the leg. How the muscles and joints further up the body are working will play a role on foot function but will also be affected by how the foot functions. It is very common for our feet to function poorly, and this can result in pain or injury in the foot, ankle, knee, hip and even back.
A biomechanical examination involves taking a series of measurements of the feet and legs with the patient standing and lying down, checking joint movements and assessing muscle strength and flexibility. We need to watch how you walk to assess the way in which your feet work.
The biomechanical examination is a 1 &1/2 hour appointment during which time many tests are carried out to assess and evaluate the lower limb. Once a diagnosis has been reached Naomi will discuss the proposed course of treatment, giving options where appropriate. It is possible that a programme of exercises and advice on footwear may be all that is necessary. You may need an orthotic insole in your footwear to improve your walking pattern.
Some of the conditions which orthotics can benefit include:-
* Arthritic or other pain in the Big
Toe Joint (or anywhere in the feet)
* Forefoot pain (Mortons neuroma,
Metatarsalgia etc)
* Heel pain (plantar fascitis)
* Arch pain
* Ankle pain
* Muscular pain in the legs, feet and
ankles
* Hip pain
* Lower back pain
Naomi has a great interest in children’s foot health and is a member of the National Interest Group for Podiatric Treatment for Children.
A lot of foot conditions are genetic in origin so if you have problems your children may too, Podiatry and Orthotic Therapy may help as they grow.
Many deformities that show up in adult life can often be traced back to early foot growth and development in children. Naomi will focus on preventative foot care and the early detection of foot deformities. It is often possible to prevent the lasting effects of abnormal foot growth and development in children by early diagnosis.
Early diagnosis is essential and many paediatric foot deformities can be treated before they progress into adult foot complications that occur later in life.
Common paediatric conditions are:
* In-toeing
* Out-toeing
* ‘Tripping’
* Tibial torsion
* Metatarsus adductus
* Genu Varum
* Perthes disease
* Knocked knees
* Talipes equinovarus
* Flat feet
* Severs Disease
* Freiburg’s Infarction
* Osteochondritis Dissecans

Many children benefit from foot Orthotic therapy and othoses help many children to enjoy sports without symptoms.

If you have Diabetes
Foot health is especially important for people who have diabetes. Diabetes can limit the blood supply to your feet and can also cause a loss of feeling in your feet. This can mean foot injuries do not heal well.
Naomi can check your feet to assess both the blood supply to your feet, look for evidence of loss of sensation and treat any corns or callus and cut your nails to avoid any foot problems developing.
